Extract form feature article about my work in Artist's Palette magazine -

Many student artists and beginners ask for my advice on how to go about painting.  My advice is not about merely painting technique but about the creative process and the correct approach. Here are a few points concerning the right approach:

  • Do not become an illustrator relying mainly on technique and perfect reproduction of external appearances.  Express your creative vision by using your original thoughts, imagination and heart.

  • As only 1% of artists can produce photographic perfection, I don’t waste my energy trying to compete with the camera.  Inspired photographers can produce such images with a fraction of the effort.

  • Emphasise what you are good at; do not struggle with the very difficult or impossible.  Find your niche and comfort zone, enjoy being there, build your confidence, then gradually take on the more difficult areas.

  • However, it is necessary to break out of your comfort zone time to time; try something completely different.  Unfamiliar challenges will liberate your mind and refresh your creativity.

  • Having fun by experimentation is better for the spirit than dogged chasing of perfection by hard labour.  Masterpieces are just as likely to emerge through controlled accidents and carefree experimentation.

  • So, welcome accidents and mistakes, often they lead to unexpected directions and unforeseen possibilities.

  • Do not dismiss art vastly different from yours, you can learn from other styles, approaches and methods.  Art is a many splendored thing!

Press Release from St Madeleine's:

The old saying that a house is not a home, until you add touches of your own. One of the most effective ways of doing this is by including original works of art in the interior design.

Artist Ernie Gerzabek endorses this enthusiastically as he has seen many ordinary residences turned into classy, visually exciting places where contemporary artworks on the walls turn a house into their home.

Ernie Gerzabek has been chosen as the Feature Artist for this year’s Artfest 2008 - Coming of Age, at St Madeleine’s Primary School Kenthurst. This annual art and craft show celebrates 21 years of exceptional arts and crafts. The show will be its largest and finest yet and Ernie Gerzabek will be in attendance on Opening Night, 7th November 2008, to present his inspiring collection of art and sculpture.

Ernie’s background as an Architect adds influence to his passions, also an edge to his contemporary paintings. Drawing inspiration from the unique landscapes of Australia and beyond, his mission is to create images which suggest aspects of the unspoilt wilderness areas and the countryside, wetlands, deserts and Sydney’s coastline in particular.

Ernie loves to use bright, cheerful ‘Aussie’ colours and to express the thrill of being alive. He concentrates on creating happy and positive images, that give a pleasant sensation to the viewer.

Most recently, Ernie has also started to explore the 3 dimensional world of sculpture. In creating these unique three dimensional sculptures, his focus was on using recycled materials - being as environmentally friendly as possible.

You can view Ernie’s collection at St Madeleine’s Artfest which will be open all weekend starting with a Gala Evening on Friday 7th November. Opening night tickets only cost $25 and include a gourmet supper and all drinks as well as live music. Opening Night also offers an opportunity to win an Ernie Gerzabek artwork.

Entry into Artfest during Saturday and Sunday is free and coffee and food is available all weekend. There will be over 350 paintings to view and over 50 craft exhibitors ranging from candles to cupcakes, bangles to birdbaths, pearls to puddings.
